New Chums Beach & Cathedral Cove

New Chums Beach
Rated as one of the world’s top 20 beaches, New Chums Beach is located just a 30 minute drive from Coromandel Motel, Holiday Park and Backpackers in Coromandel Town.

New Chums beach has gained its top 20 title due to its secluded location and is only accessible by foot or sea. To reach this gem, your journey begins at the northern end of Whangapoua Beach on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. Find driving directions to New Chums Beach, from our Coromandel backpackers here. The beach is more easily accessible at low-tide, as you’ll need to walk around the rocky headland to reach the track over the hill. Once on the track, weave through a grove of native nikau and pohutukawa trees, down to the jewel that is New Chums Beach. The walk takes around 30 minutes. On the beach you’ll be greeted with warm golden sands and a beach that stretches far into the distance. You’ll be sure to find a private spot, even during the busy Christmas and New Year period. Our Coromandel Peninsula accommodation is the perfect base to explore New Chums beach and the many surrounding towns. Book your accommodation at our holiday park in Coromandel today!

Cathedral Cove
You’ll find Cathedral Cove at the northern end of Hahei on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula; a 1 hour 15 minute drive from our Coromandel holiday park. Click here to view our location map. You’ll find that the trek to Cathedral Cove is a spectacular thing to do while travelling around the Coromandel Peninsula.

Like all great New Zealand beaches, Cathedral Cove is only accessible by foot or sea. The hike takes around 1 hour 30 minutes return, while accessing the cove by boat or kayak is considerably faster.

Cathedral Cove and the surrounding 9 square kilometres of ocean is a marine park. Bring your snorkelling gear, or grab a set of gear on your way to Cathedral Cove from the Hahei snorkel and dive shop. The vibrant fish-life here is truly astounding!

The track to Cathedral Cove and the beach itself becomes very busy in the Christmas / New Year holiday period, and finding a car park at the start of the track can be difficult. At these peak times, a bus runs from Hahei, up the hill to the track, which is a great option. If you’re planning to stay at our Coromandel camping ground over the Christmas / New Year holiday, be sure to book your accommodation far in advance, to avoid disappointment!
