Coromandel Mountain Biking, Walking & Running Tracks

The Coromandel Peninsula is well-known for its picturesque, bush-clad ranges and the many mountain biking, walking and running tracks which interlace their ridges and valleys. Mountain bikes are available for hire from our Coromandel Peninsula accommodation. Check with us at reception which of the below walking tracks are suitable for mountain biking.

Short Walks (up to 30 minutes return)
Short walks from Coromandel Town include the 10 minute return walk to the Waiau Waterfall. In summer, be sure to pack your togs for a swim under the falls. For a great lookout point, stop-off at the Whangapoua Summit Lookout for sweeping views of Coromandel Town, Whangapoua Harbour and Matarangi. The 309 Kauri Grove is a further short walk (approx 15 minutes return), which leads visitors through the 13 massive kauri trees which grace this area. For an additional lookout spot, with a taste of New Zealand history, visit the Tokatea Lookout, which starts at the summit of the Kennedy Bay Road. This 30 minute return walk guides sightseers up a short, steep track, passing through the site where soldiers kept watch over the Coromandel Peninsula coast, in WWII. For directions to any of the above walks, please contact us at our Coromandel holiday park!

Long Walks (up to7 hours return)
The Coromandel Peninsula boasts a number of walkways and hiking tracks for those who seek a challenge. Castle Rock is the core of an old volcano, which sits on the ridge of the Coromandel Peninsula, approximately 9 kilometres from Coromandel Town and Coromandel Motel, Holiday Park and Backpackers. Castle Rock is a challenging 2 hour return walk; yet from the peak, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the coastline.

The Waiau Summit Track leads visitors through the 309 Kauri Grove, and traces an old coach road over the range, back down to the main road. This trek will take you around 4 hours return. For the ultimate Coromandel Peninsula trek, the Coromandel Coastal Walkway offers a 7 hour return hike along 8 kilometres of coast, farmland and forest; with outstanding views throughout. The Coromandel Coastal Walkway departs from Fletcher Bay, at the northern end of the Coromandel Peninsula. Our Coromandel backpacker cabins and Coromandel campsites are ideal for trampers.
