Day Trips from Coromandel Town

Coromandel Town is the ideal spot from which to base yourself on the Coromandel Peninsula. See below for a number of fun day trips – all within 1 hours’ drive from our Coromandel motel, holiday park and backpacker accommodation

Whitianga
Whitianga is located on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, around 40 minutes’ drive from Coromandel Town. Whitianga is the largest settlement in Mercury Bay, with a population of around 4,000 permanent residents; however, the population flourishes in the summer months. During your stay at Coromandel Motel, Holiday Park and Backpackers, Whitianga is the ideal town to visit for a large range of stores, for a spot of shopping or as a lunch stop before a day at one of the local beaches. Whitianga is also home to the indulgent hot pools: The Lost Spring, which boasts a selection of spa treatments to soothe the sole.

Hot Water Beach
Hot Water Beach is a world famous attraction and a must see thing to do on the Coromandel Peninsula. For a successful Hot Water Beach experience, you’ll need to know when to arrive and what to bring. The best time to arrive is 1 hour before low tide, giving you enough time to find your spot and dig your hole in the sand. You’ll then have until around 1 hour after low tide to enjoy your own hot water pool. It’s recommended to bring your own spade and bucket; yet spades and buckets are available for hire if needed. A bucket is essential for bringing cold seawater up from the ocean to mix with the hot water which will seep from the bottom of your hole. For tide times, the team at our Coromandel Peninsula accommodation are happy to advise!

Thames
When travelling to Coromandel Town, Thames is the first small town that you will come across. As the gateway to the Coromandel Peninsula, Thames is the best place to stock up at the supermarket, before travelling the final 50 minutes up to Coromandel Town. Thames features great fishing spots in the calm waters of the Firth of Thames and is backed by the Coromandel Ranges, which provide a multitude of walking tracks. Cape Colville / Port Jackson
Around 25 kilometres north of Coromandel Town is the small town of Colville. Colville is the northern-most town on the Coromandel Peninsula, yet is still some 28 kilometres from the settlement of Port Jackson, which is close to the northern-most point of the peninsula. The area north of Colville is extremely isolated, with metal roads and few stores. Be sure to refuel in Colville before heading further up the coast. The amazing isolation of the area means bushwalking tracks; fishing spots and wildlife are plentiful. For more information please ask at reception during your stay at our Coromandel holiday park.
