Coromandel Town

Known for its laidback atmosphere, arty culture and gold mining history, Coromandel Town is the perfect location for a relaxed getaway from the big city.

From fishing and sailing, to tramping, exhillerating mountain biking and picturesque swimming and snorkelling, there’s plenty to keep you occupied in Coromandel Town.

Gold Town
Step back into the past as you explore Coromandel. An original old gold mining town, many original buildings still stand - and you can visit the mining museum or even pan for gold at the old Stamper Battery!

Coromandel Restaurant and Cafes
Eating out is a leisurely affair in Coromandel Town. Whether it’s a-la-carte dining on fresh crayfish, mussels and oysters or an al fresco brunch with an award-winning, locally-roasted espresso at one of our great cafes, you’ll find something to suit your tastes. Perhaps take in a sunset with fish and chips on the beach! All this and more is just a short walk from our Coromandel Peninsula accommodation.

Coromandel Arts & Crafts
For a more leisurely experience, stroll around the old gold town and experience the vibrant local art. Explore the local art and gift shops - Coromandel has a rich art heritage, and the local artists create work of an exceptionally high standard. There is also a selection of inspiring local galleries, just out of town. Ask us at our Coromandel Motel, Holiday Park and Backpackers reception for specific galleries and driving directions.

Driving Creek Railway & Potteries
For a unique experience, visit the famous Driving Creek Railway & Potteries, with amazing views over the Hauraki Gulf from the Eyeful tower! Purchase a treasure from the pottery store or board the small train which will take you on a 1 hour return trip up the hill through an innovatively-designed course, which includes 2 spirals, 3 short tunnels and several viaducts. Owner / Operator Barry Brickell began building the train track in 1975, yet it was not until 1990 that the track was licensed to carry the public. The Driving Creek Railway is one of the Coromandel Peninsula’s truly unique attractions.

The Waterworks
Another unique kiwi experience is The Waterworks; an interactive water adventure park, full of fun water activities for the whole family. Around 70% of the interactive activities at The Waterworks are made from recycled materials, making this attraction a highly environmentally-friendly day out. Try pumping water while cycling on the bikes, take a splash in the swimming hole or make friends with the farm animals as you make your way around the park.
Coromandel Town Information Centre
For the most up-to-date information on things to see and do in Coromandel, or if you do get stuck or can't find your way, contact the Coromandel Town Information centre - just 300 metres from our Coromandel holiday park, at 355 Kapanga Rd. They're open 7 days a week!

Take the kids snorkelling
Explore the underwater paradise of the Cathedral Cove marine park. Bring your snorkelling gear, or grab a set of gear on your way to Cathedral Cove from the Hahei snorkel and dive shop. The vibrant fish-life here is truly astounding!
